Microelectrode arrays (MEAs) have been applied for in vivo and in vitro recording and stimulation of electrogenic cells, namely neurons and cardiac myocytes, for almost four decades. Extracellular recordings using the MEA technique inflict minimum adverse effects on cells and enable long term applications such as implants in brain or heart tissue.
Hence, MEAs pose a powerful tool for studying the processes of learning and memory, investigating the pharmacological impacts of drugs and the fundamentals of the basic electrical interface between novel electrode materials and biological tissue. Yet in order to study the areas mentioned above, powerful signal processing and data analysis tools are necessary.
In this paper a novel toolbox for the offline analysis of cell signals is presented that allows a variety of parameters to be detected and analyzed. We developed an intuitive graphical user interface (GUI) that enables users to perform high quality data analysis. The presented MATLAB® based toolbox gives the opportunity to examine a multitude of parameters, such as spike and neural burst timestamps, network bursts, as well as heart beat frequency and signal propagation for cardiomyocytes, signal-to-noise ratio and many more. Additionally a spike-sorting tool is included, offering a powerful tool for cases of multiple cell recordings on a single microelectrode.
For stimulation purposes, artifacts caused by the stimulation signal can be removed from the recording, allowing the detection of field potentials as early as 5 ms after the stimulation.

Cyber security is not safety.
I've updated a talk I gave in 2010 to include the latest FDA guidance on mobile devices and cyber security. But really nothing has changed since then. Medical device vendors are still grappling with the notion that cyber security involves a complex, interconnected, rapidly changing landscape of vulnerabilities, threats, zero-day exploits, software security issues that does not fit the slow-moving pre-market approval and static risk analysis that FDA uses for safety.
In this presentation we show how to use a practical threat analysis methodology and present real-life examples of how to build a prioritized, cost-effective security countermeasure plan.

Managing cyber security for medical devices is a challenge for medical device vendors and regulatory consultants who are accustomed to estimating patient safety risk without having to explain and understand a complex, rapidly changing and interconnected environment of vulnerabilities, attackers, attacker entry points and zero-day threats.
In this updated version of a talk I gave 5 years ago - I show how to use threat modeling in order to provide a prioritized security countermeasure plan that will cost the medical device vendor the least amount of money and save him the grief of trying to deal with cyber threats in his safety risk analysis.

This document describes the design and implementation of a pulse oximeter system to monitor patients' health conditions using machine learning. The system uses a MAX30100 module to measure patients' oxygen saturation (SpO2) levels and heart rates. It sends this real-time data to the cloud using an ESP8266 WiFi module and the IoT platform. An ML algorithm analyzes the historical health data and predicts one of nine health categories for each patient. The algorithm was tested on 1304 patient samples and validated by a doctor. This document describes the design and implementation of a pulse oximeter system to monitor patients' health conditions using machine learning. The system uses a MAX30100 module to measure patients' oxygen saturation (SpO2) levels and heart rates. It sends this real-time data to the cloud using an ESP8266 WiFi module and the IoT platform. An ML algorithm analyzes the historical health data and predicts one of nine health categories for each patient. The algorithm was tested on 1304 patient samples and validated by a doctor. Different ML algorithms (KNN, decision tree, random forest) were compared to classify health conditions, with random forest achieving the best accuracy of 99.81%.
